 These are the recommended steps to build a dog kennel:

1) Where do you want to put your dog kennel? Inside or outside? You can use existing walls for dog kennel in the basement or garage. If the dog house will be outside then you could use the side of a shed as well or tie it into the garage. Now is the time to consider if a building will give shade – or a tree will. Think about which direction the wind comes from for the dog house door. How many dogs will your dog kennel accommodate? Don’t forget room for dogs to get in and out and the door clearance.

That’s really the two elements to a dog kennel – the doghouse and then the fence around it. A roof too, depending on if you want it or not. As you can see from the pictures I have two Golden Retrievers. One is younger and full of energy and the other is much more relaxed. So the doghouse will be occupied by Duke most of the time and Dakota will be running around the enclosure.   The doghouse for me only needed to have one entrance, but I wanted a “doggie door” style as we get some snow and some brisk winds up here in New York. That was an easy option to put on. Also the roof needed to be steep for the snow load and I wanted to extend a little porch on the side so there was some shade from the sun in the summer. The walls I did put animal safe insulation and put up an interior wall. We put some cork board in the bottom of the doghouse for insulation from the ground and the elements, and then we put down a blanket and then two dog beds. The pass through dog door is a smoked plastic so it lets the light in.

  The Kennel part of the dog kennel plans was a chain link fence. Since the load is not that of a deck I was able to use my posthole digger and some 8 foot steel poles. I put them 2 feet in the ground and then surrounded it with the fence. Dakota does like to jump and put her paws up on the fence – so it moves a bit but the posts for the kennel don’t. I didn’t know how to build a dog kennel and now I am going to help my buddy in the spring do one for him!
